Good to know the terms before swinging the club. Learn the most common golf terms with humor. Here’s another set to digest.

Driving Iron

The #1 iron, sometimes used for tee shots. Its chief virtue is that, unlike a wooden-headed driver, it puts a deep cut in the ball while driving it into rough or out of bounds, thus enduring that if the golfer who hit the ball cannot find it, not other player will get any use out of it.

Driving Range

A place where golfers go to get all the good shots out of their systems.

Dropping a Ball

A recent rule change does away with the old requirement that players introducing a ball to replace one that is lost do so by dropping it over their shoulder and behind their back. Players may now drop it at arm’s length in any direction they choose. Of course, as before, a penalty stroke is assessed. This rule change does not affect clandestine ball drops, which are still made from the bottom edge of the pants pocket with the thumb and first two fingers of one hand while idly swinging a club with the other. And, it goes without saying, there is still no penalty for such drops.

Duffer

A golfer whose actual score on any given hole is ordinarily more than twice his or her reported score.

Eagle

Unusually low score on a hole achieved by a golfer with an exceptionally good drive and one or two exceptionally good follow up shots, or by a golfer with an exceptionally poor memory.

Equipment

According to the rules of golf, equipment is “anything that can be thrown, broken, kicked, twisted, torn, crushed, shredded or mangled; or propelled, driven or directed either under its own power or by means of transfer of momentum, into underbush, trees or other overgrown terrain; or over the edge of a natural or artificially elevated area; or below the surface of any body of water, whether moving or impounded.”

The Secret of winning at Augusta National

April 17th, 2012

According to Geoff Ogilvy, the 2006 U.S. Open winner and a three time World Golf Champion, Augusta National has a certain playing angle that will sure fire a player to winning.

He said, “The whole point of Augusta is to have your second shots, third shots and chip shots and putts going uphill as much as possible. You have to figure out the angles to do that.” Imagination is your partner in figuring out the proper angles. In addition, never getting above the hole on the putting surfaces is another must.

“The greens are so fast and so slopey that if you get above the hole anywhere, you have a bad angle pretty much,” he says. “And if you have to go over bunkers or water at the wrong angle, say to a short pin, you have no chance.”

Based from Ogilvy’s expert view, there are a lot of putts you can’t take on. You can have a 20-foot putt with 15 feet of break if you want to hole it. But if you just go straight at the hole, it might dribble down close to the hole. You’ll never hole the putt, but you will two-putt. If you want to hole putts, you risk three-putts.

With the severity of the greens and elevation changes, figuring out the proper angle of attack depends on the position of the pin, which can change the complexion of the entire hole and thus the plan of attack.

Every year, Ogilvy says he learns something about the course that proves to be a benefit.

“It is a course that encourages attack,” Ogilvy says. “But if you miss with your attack, you are penalized so severely.”

Must Know Common Golf Terms

April 14th, 2012

Double Bogey

Two strokes over par, or, for a golfer who happened to score a 7 on a long par-5, a birdie and an eagle that occurred on the same hole.

Double Eagle

Three strokes less than par for a given hole. This unusual achievement might be accomplished by, say taking advantage of a tailwind on a straight par-5 hole to get down in two strokes, scoring a hole-in-one a short par-4 or just skipping entirely a difficult par-3 hole.

Dress

Although clothes in a variety of styles are acceptable on a golf course, a few general pointers are worth keeping in mind when selecting an outfit.
-It should be visible to an individual with normal eyesight looking out the window of a spacecraft in orbit.
-It should be made out of a fabric derived from a substance that was mined or refined rather than grown or raised.
-It should jam radar.
-It should be composed of no fewer than eight separate colors or shades and should bear a minimum of four distinct emblems.
-When scuffed, the shoes should require repainting or restuccoing rather than shining.
-Any hat should be identifiable as such only by its position on the wearer’s head.

Drive

The initial shot on each hole, made with a special wood, the driver, on par-4 and par-5 hole, and with shorter words or irons on par-3 holes. Because the drive is so critical to the play of the hole, total concentration is essential and thus, if the shot is spoiled because of some audible disturbance inadvertently caused by another player on the tee, such as pair of shoelace tips clicking together or the wind whistling through an onlooker’s eyelashes, it is customary to take the shot over.

Delay

Golfers are expected to play “without undue delays.” The question of exactly what constitute undue delay has been under intensive study since 1971.

Dimples

Tiny circular hollows impressed onto the outer covering of golf balls to regulate their lift. The surface is also usually punctuated with at least one large cut, or “smile,” cause by a shanked iron shot. Curiously, golfers who complete these “faces” by adding eyes, ears, hair and a nose to roughly resemble whoever taught them golf find that they can hit their works of art twice the distance of an undecorated ball.

Divot

Colorful Scottish word for the piece of turf scooped from the ground in front of the ball in the course of an iron shot. In Scotland, depending on its size, a divot is referred to as a “wee tuftie” (2” x 4”), “peg o’ sward” (4” x 6”), “snatch of haugh” (6’ x 8”), “fine tussock” (8” x 10”), “glen” (1’ X 2’), “flirth” (1 1/2’ x 3’), “loch” (2’ x 4’) and “damned English divot” (anything larger than 8 square feet).

Dogleg

A hole with a 90 angle between the tee and the green. One with a pockmarked tee area, unkempt fairways or a patchy green is a “dogear”. One on which large amounts of casual water regularly accumulate is a “dog paddle.” One with an elevated tee and green and a sunken, treacherous approach is a “dog dish.” And a course on which holes like these predominate is, simply, a “dog.”

Dormie

Formal term for a term in match play that leads by as many holes as remain to be played. “Hustlers” will often deliberately shoot poorly during the early part of a round to get gullible opponents into this apparently favorable position, then propose a greatly increased, all or nothing bet on the remaining holes, with a sudden death playoff if necessary. How can you spot these tricksters? It’s not easy but, generally speaking, don’t play golf for money with players who use two-piece clubs that unscrew in the center of the shaft, who put baby powder on their hands before grasping the driver or use billiard chalk on their clubfaces or who have a habit of saying things like “Dunlop 4 in the center pocket” before making a putt.

Golf courses get green light early on nutrients

April 5th, 2012

Today’s press release from Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship could be the first one to ever come from the department that quickens the pulses of golfers in the province.

It announced that golf courses across southern Manitoba can start applying nutrients to their fairways and greens, three weeks earlier than normal. (The same restriction has also been lifted for farmers on crop land.)

Traditionally, nutrients are banned prior to April 10 to ensure they aren’t applied to frozen ground and don’t run off when the soil thaws.

“This year’s unseasonably warm temperatures mean that soils across southern Manitoba are no longer frozen. This, combined with low moisture content, will guard against nutrient runoff to waterways,” the department said.

All other requirements of the nutrient management regulation remain in effect. Nutrients cannot be applied to sensitive lands along waterways or to lands classified as Nutrient Management Zone N4.

All golf courses and driving ranges must submit a nutrient management plan describing how they will manage nutrients during the 2012 growing season.

Men’s golf resumes season with match in San Diego

April 2nd, 2012

The BG men’s golf team resumes its spring golf season this week for the Triumph at Pauma Valley, Calif.

The Falcons are one of 11 teams playing the 54-hole event hosted by the University of San Francisco. The other schools participating besides BG and San Francisco are Army, Austin Peay, British Columbia, Cal State-Bakersfield, Cal State-San Marcos, Central Arkansas, Columbia, Manitoba and Yale.

Central Arkansas is the defending champion of the Triumph, firing an 874 which was 19 shots better than San Francisco’s second place score of 893.

Official starting time for the tournament is Monday morning at 8 a.m. for the first 36 holes, while the last 18 holes will take place with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

This is the second tournament of the spring semester for the Falcons. BG last participated in the MAC Match-Play Event in Dade City, Fla. where BG finished in eighth place. Therefore, this will be the first stroke play event for the Falcons in 2012.

Coach Garry Winger will lead his Falcons squad at Pauma Valley Country Club, which is located approximately 60 miles north of San Diego. The track is a par 71 at 7,077 yards surrounded by mountains and avocado and citrus groves.

Pauma Valley Country Club is a Robert Trent Jones Sr. design, one of the greatest architects and names in the golf world.

Jones has built or rebuilt 400 courses total that covers 45 states and 35 different countries. Additionally, several of these courses have hosted national and international championships.

Manitoba weather records broken

March 30th, 2012

It has been a record breaking week for communities across Manitoba weather-wise and the temperature is expected to keep going up.

Another temperature record was shattered in Winnipeg on Saturday with a high of 19 C. The previous record for March 17 was 12.2 C set in 1938.

Jamie McCreedy at Fantasy Lake Golf Club in Springfield said the course also broke a record Saturday for the earliest opening date ever.

Most golf courses don’t open until April in Manitoba, but this year, some are ready for business.

“People were calling like crazy to see if we would be open,” said McCreedy. “I guess people are starting to know we’re one of the first courses in the city to open and just with the amount of phone calls we decided to give it a try.”

McCreedy said Sunday is expected to be even busier.

That’s because it has been forecast to be a scorching hot day for this time of year with a high of 26 C in many parts of the province including Winnipeg and Brandon.

If the high is reached will break yet another record this week — the highest temperature for March 18 was set in 2000 at 8.8 C.

Common Must know Golf Terms

March 27th, 2012

Here’s another set of Golf Terminologies to review before you pick up your golf bag and start swinging away.

Waggle

To swing the club back and forth in short, sweeping motions above the ball after addressing it and before beginning the backswing. Another preparatory motion players often make is a “forward press,” a slight shifting of weight to the left leg accompanied by a partial bending of the right knee just prior to starting the backswing. In extreme cases, particularly when a crucial stroke is about to be made, players may, even before setting up for the shot, make an “upward address” by fully bending both knees until they touch the ground, then tilting the head forward and clasping the hands together, fingers fully interlocked.

Warm-up Exercises

Although golf is not as physically demanding as most other sports, it certainly doesn’t hurt to loosen up one’s muscles before a round. Here are a few simple exercises designed to get you ready for the day’s play:

  •  Hold out your arm, make a fist and shake it back and forth, then open the fist, palm facing inward, extend the middle finger and pump your hand up and down
  • Kick at the ground, then stomp on it, first with your right foot, then with your left, then jump up and down.
  • Take off your hat, grasp it in your hand, throw it on the ground, pick it up and repeat.
  • Raise your arms over your head, fists clenched, wave them vigorously and let our as loud a scream as you can, holding it for at least 15 seconds.

Water Hazard

Any boggle waddub borderburbled byb reb orb yellob markglubs fromble whidg idg uz legalble, bug ofteb inadvisabubble, tub tryb tub higgle thub ballablub.

Whiff

A stroke that completely missed the ball. The more prevalent term for this type of shot is “warm-up swing”.

Wind

Natural motion of the air. There are four basic winds that golfers have to contend with: a headwind; a wind that blows squarely in their faces; a wind that blows from a point directly in front of them to a point directly behind them.

Winter Rules

Local rules that permit balls to be lifted, cleaned and replaced in a preferred, more favorable lie without penalty during periods when adverse weather conditions make proper maintenance of the fairways impractical. Most golfers generally adhere to winter rules from the 1st of November until Halloween.

Woods

1. Type of golf club used to drive the ball a long distance.
2. Where the ball lands after being driven a long distance.

Wrist

In golfers, the swollen joint that connects a sore hand to an aching elbow and a painful shoulder.

Golf courses to swing open on weekend

March 24th, 2012

Golfing in March? Without going to Palm Springs, Calif., or Orlando, Fla.? Absolutely!

Several golf courses in and around Winnipeg will open for business Saturday morning.
In the city, John Blumberg will have 18 holes ready for play, with another nine to open Sunday.

“I think it’s the earliest we’ve ever opened. And I’ve been here 30 years,” said Ben Smirnov, general manager of the Blumberg course.

Cottonwood, just east of Winnipeg on Highway 1, is opening Saturday at 8 a.m., while Kingswood near La Salle is also opening at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Fantasy Lake Golf Course, also located just east of the city on Highway 1, will open its course for play Saturday, the earliest it has ever opened.

The Winnipeg Canoe Club, also operated by Smirnov Golf Management, will open for business Sunday.

“Hopefully, two days after we open we don’t get a Colorado low moving in,” said Smirnov.

A low-pressure storm producing heavy snow could certainly happen.
It’s only mid-March, for goodness sake.

Smirnov said he remembers about five years ago the Blumberg course opened for play around March 23. Patrons enjoyed about six “glorious” days of golf — but then winter came roaring back to southern Manitoba.

“A Colorado low dumped about a bunch of snow on us, and it knocked us out for two weeks,” he recalled, with a laugh.
